Senior Project and ESLR's
1. What ESLR have you excelled in most in your senior project?
I feel that I have excelled in the effective learner category.
2. Please explain why you think you have excelled in this ESLR.
I have excelled in this ESLR because throughout the senior project, I have assumed responsibility for my own learning. Also I feel that I have gone above and beyond for acquiring more resources that could help me understand my senior project topic better such as getting more legitimate research such as articles from the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and also doing extra interviews. Also there have been a few occasions where I choose to better my senior project. One of them was when I changed my EQ. The first EQ that I had centered around gestational diabetes and after doing my third interview, I found out that the answers were going to be self explanatory and I wanted to challenge myself so I went looking for help and I came across infant mortality. I feel this is one of the best choices that I have made because it challenges me everyday. In the articles that I have gotten which relate to infant morality it usually talks about the medication that they administer to mothers or babies which is complex and usually hard to remember or learn about.
3. Provide evidence from your senior project to support your claim (evidence is a photo of something you are doing, photo of something you made, etc).
The evidence can be seen through my Working Bibliography. Another piece of evidence that I have is picture of the book called Primary Care in Obstetrics and Gynecology. I got this book out of my own free will because it seemed as if it would provide a great overview of my topic, which it did. It was really helpful in making me understand what types of situations OB/GYN's go through which was great because it helped me get a better perspective on the foundation of my topic.

2-Hour Meeting Answer #3
1. What is your essential question?
My essential question is what is the most important development in modern obstetrics to lowering infant mortality?
2. What is your third answer to your essential question (write your third answer in a complete sentence)?
My third answer to my essential question is reducing the rate of teenage pregnancies.
3. What are three details to support or justify your third answer (details are examples or facts)?
The three details that justify my third answer are although the rate of teenage pregnancy has dropped, it is still important for teenage girls to learn which form of contraceptive is useful to prevent an unwanted pregnancy. According to the CDC website, specifically the section about teenage pregnancy, "Pregnancy and birth are significant contributors to high school drop out rates among girls. Only about 50% of teen mothers receive a high school diploma by 22 years of age, versus approximately 90% of women who had not given birth during adolescence." This means that it is vital that teenage girls know the importance of contraceptives if they are having sexual relations and if not it is still important to educate girls. Also from the CDC website in the teenage pregnancy section,"Prevention of teen pregnancy requires evidence-based sex education, support for parents in talking with their children about pregnancy prevention and other aspects of sexual and reproductive health, and ready access to effective and affordable contraception for teens who are sexually active."
4. What source helped you prove this answer is justified for your essential question?
The source(s) that helped me prove this answer is justified for my essential question are:
I plan to study more about teenage pregnancy because I haven't gotten a lot of research on this topic. Also I think by getting more research, I could fully comprehend the overall aspect of teenage pregnancy.

2-Hour Meeting Answer #2
Content:
1. What is your essential question?
My essential question is "What is the most important development in modern obstetrics to lowering infant mortality?"
2. What is your second answer to your essential question (write your second answer in a complete sentence)?
My second answer to my essential question is to reduce premature births.
3. What are three details to support or justify your second answer (details are examples or facts)?
The current rate of preterm birth in California is 9.9 which is low compared to Mississippi, who has a 17.6 rate of preterm births. However it is an important factor to infant mortality because preterm babies are more susceptible to dying before they reach their first birthday. Also maternal age is very important in determining whether the baby is going to be premature, that is why many OB's instruct mothers to have their babies before age 35 to reduce the risk of birth defects or complications during labor. Another way to reduce preterm labor is to educate many teens to prevent unwanted pregnancies because this group is less likely to go to their prenatal visits and not take care of themselves adequately especially during pregnancy.
4. What source helped you prove this answer is justified for your essential question?
5. What do you plan to study next with your second answer and why?
I plan on studying more about premature labor in order to understand what it is exactly and how mothers can decrease their chance of going into premature labor. I plan on doing more research in order to educate myself more and also to have good information to give to my peers during my presentation.

Senior Project Update
Content:
(1) What are you currently doing in your independent component?
I am taking classes at Claremont on Friday from 7-9:30 about the Bradley Method which is one of the birthing techniques that women can do. Since the drive to Claremont is getting tedious, I am going to be taking classes on pregnancy at Kaiser for the remainder of my independent component.
(2) The piece of research that was significant in helping me understand where to go next in my senior project was an article about Vaginal Birth After Previous Cesarean Delivery (VBAC). I learned that doctors must follow certain criteria before allowing women to have a vaginal birth after a previous cesarean delivery. I also learned that if a woman had a vaginal birth before a cesarean delivery, increases the chances of having a VBAC. I am going to research more about VBAC so I have more information or read about different cases on women who had VBAC's.
(3) Provide evidence from your independent component or the piece of research as something you recently did. For example, a photo of something you working on for your independent component or your notes from the video you watched.

Blog 9: Working EQ and Possible Answers
Content:
(1) The working EQ that I used during the 10 minute presentation was, "What is the best way to become a successful OB/GYN?"
(2) No I didn't decide to revise my EQ after my presentation. I actually revised it the day before the presentation because the revised version made more sense to me and it was also shorter.
(3) Some possible answers to my working EQ are:

(3) Some possible answers to my working EQ are:
- Establishing a good connection with patients and staff in the department because if you have a bad connection with them, patients won't trust you to deliver their child and the staff wont like working with you.
- You need to know about the female reproductive system and how to prevent any diseases very well. You also need to know about the various aspects that go into OB and GYN such as maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, or Gynecological Oncology.

Topic Choice
Content
A: What is your topic and why?
- My topic is Obstetrics and Gynecology and the reason that I choose this topic is because I really enjoying being around pregnant women and hearing the stories they tell about their child's birth. Also I think this would be a great topic to teach others about. Since I want to go into the medical field in the near future and know that I would love to treat/diagnose moms and their babies, then this route is best.
B: What do you hope to accomplish this year with your topic (connecting each answer to the 4 ESLR's)
- I-poly citizen: I plan to give the utmost respect to members of Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park and my peers at I-poly. This relates to me improving as an I-poly citizen because the experience that I have had at I-poly have prepared to speak to strangers without being shy and thus helps me in the hospital when I volunteer. Also being punctual and having deadlines is an important part of my volunteering service because members, lab work, and patient information papers always need to be taken to different departments and doing so untimely would be disastrous. This also applies to any assignment that is given by the Senior Team.
- Effective Communicator: I plan to improve my verbal skills with my peers at I-poly and members of Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park. In doing so, I will be able to better communicate and listen better to my classmates and members visiting the hospital. Also improving my verbal skills will help me work better with other volunteers, doctors, and nurses. This will make me more effective of a learner because once I have completed my goal, I will be able to teach others with ease and with legitimate knowledge. I will also be able to teach my peers with articulacy and insightful information that I have learned.
- Effective Learner: I plan to assume responsibility for my learning by setting up timely deadlines for my assignments in the core classes, as well as for the senior project. I also plan to complete my research punctually and make effective use of my time whenever I have free time. This will make me an effective learner because all of the things mentioned above will better prepare me for my presentation on my senior topic, college, or a job that I might acquire in the future. By accessing this new information given to me and conducting a presentation , I will be able to teach other students about my topic and will do so accurately and will hopefully learn something from my presentation.
- Effective User of Technology: I plan to find research and take advantage of the resources around me. This will make me a more effective technology user because I would quickly know how to utilize any device that I have handy whether its at school or public source. I will also use the research that I acquire by presenting the information with a technological tool that will display the information accurately and creatively, thus making me an effective user of technology.
