Working EQ

The Pentagon

(1) Positive Statement: A positive thing that has happened as a result of what I have done so far is that I got to meet mentors that can help me with my senior project. Since I now volunteer in the Pediatrics department, I meet R.N's, M.D.'s and other professionals with clinical experience.

(2) EQ Content: My interview has helped improve my understanding of my topic because it made me more aware that pediatricians not only treat small children, but they also see adolescents. Also, my interview helped me understand what type of characteristics professionals in the pediatric department need to have such as patience.

(3) So far, the research checks have been really helpful because I can get more knowledge about my topic and can give me a few ideas for the science fair. The research checks have also giving me an inside view as to what type of cases pediatricians have to see on a daily basis.

(4) I think that wasn't worked for me is acquiring the time to talk to some of my mentors. Most of them have really busy schedules and I have to find a way to work around them in order to get interviews or just ask them a question.

 (5) Finding Value:  Based on your experience so far.

  • A question that comes to mind regarding what I would like to study is, how vigorous or challenging the course load is in medical school. Also aside from seeing patients, what else do doctors do when they go  into their offices.
  • My end goal this year for my senior project is to do a good job explaining my topic to others and while I'm presenting, it shows that I have worked really hard to become an expert on my topic.
  • I would really like to talk to a doctor who works in my topic field, because they can tell me how they got interested in doing their job or what it takes to become a doctor. I believe that a doctor can teach me a lot of things pertaining to my topic and probably tell me interesting stories about their first day as a doctor.

Science Fair Blog A: Problem Statement

1.  Topic: OB/GYN

2. Problem: More women are diagnosed with having Postpartum Depression shortly after giving birth. I would solve this problem by giving a diagnostic test to see how many women test positive for having postpartum depression. If they test positive, I would tell them to see a therapist and follow up after the sessions to make sure the patients are felling well. I would then publish my results in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

3. Problem: If women have a high BMI, women could have an emergency C-section performed. I would solve this problem, my closely monitoring the patients BMI and tell them that they are at a high risk of having a C-section. Or suggest that they  make healthier choices not only for themselves, but for their child's health as well. Again I would publish my findings with the help of a doctor in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Interview Preparation

Content

1. I plan to interview an M.D., R.N., P.A., or an L.V.N. for my first interview. Since its going to be taking place on Thursday, I still do not know who I am going to be interviewing but it's going to be someone who has clinical experience in the Pediatrics department. I am going to interview one of the persons mentioned above because they are the ones that have the most contact with patients. Also they have been through enough schooling and have extensive knowledge to teach me about Pediatrics.

2. Additional Questions:

  • What has been your educational journey to get where you are now?
  • How did you decide this career was right for you?
  • What is a regular work day like for you?
  • What is your relationship like with the doctors or nurses who work in the department?
  • How important is it to establish a connection with the patients?

Topic Choice

Content

A: What is your topic and why?

  •  My topic is Obstetrics and Gynecology and the reason that I choose this topic is because I really enjoying being around pregnant women and hearing the stories they tell about their child's birth. Also I think this would be a great topic to teach others about. Since I want to go into the medical field in the near future and know that I would love to treat/diagnose moms and their babies, then this route is best.

B: What do you hope to accomplish this year with your topic (connecting each answer to the 4 ESLR's)
  • I-poly citizen: I plan to give the utmost respect to members of Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park and my peers at I-poly. This relates to me improving as an I-poly citizen because the experience that I have had at I-poly have prepared to speak to strangers without being shy and thus helps me in the hospital when I volunteer. Also being punctual and having deadlines is an important part of my volunteering service because members, lab work, and patient information papers always need to be taken to different departments and doing so untimely would be disastrous. This also applies to any assignment that is given by the Senior Team.
  • Effective Communicator: I plan to improve my verbal skills with my peers at I-poly and members of Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park. In doing so, I will be able to better communicate and listen better to my classmates and members visiting the hospital. Also improving my verbal skills will help me work better with other volunteers, doctors, and nurses. This will make me more effective of a learner because once I have completed my goal, I will be able to teach others with ease and with legitimate knowledge. I will also be able to teach my peers with articulacy and insightful information that I have learned.
  • Effective Learner: I plan to assume responsibility for my learning by setting up timely deadlines for my assignments in the core classes, as well as for the senior project. I also plan to complete my research punctually and make effective use of my time whenever I have free time. This will make me an effective learner because all of the things mentioned above will better prepare me for my presentation on my senior topic, college, or a job that I might acquire in the future. By accessing this new information given to me and conducting a presentation , I will be able to teach other students about my topic and will do so accurately and will hopefully learn something from my presentation.
  • Effective User of Technology: I plan to find research and take advantage of the resources around me. This will make me a more effective technology user because I would quickly know how to utilize any device that I have handy whether its at school or public source. I will also use the research that I acquire by presenting the information with a technological tool that will display the information accurately and creatively, thus making me an effective user of technology.
